My name's Chris and I do not have my thumb on the pulse of anything - pretty much everything I think people like is wrong and pretty much everything I like is unpopular with the majority; do I care? Guess. I am definitely not making any video content for kids, as UA-cam require content providers to acknowledge if they are, and I'm not. Nope.
One thing I do rather like is caving. You may notice this as a regular theme in my film stuff. Therefore I hope you like caving too! - I do other stuff, but adventurey-malarkey is my favourite.
Therefore it is perhaps a fundamental error to think that I make films for anyone other than myself. I make films for me. If you like them, bonus. I don't make videos for kids. Can't stick 'em.

Andy Horeckyj's Grebe Diary April 2024 lower resolution

A one-tenth size film reduced from 4.9Gb to 510Mb with enhanced audio, some software framing/clipping to remove extraneous shadows etc., but otherwise a more user-friendly uploadable piece than the massively high resolution 4K original; hopefully Andy understands the liberties taken with his original footage and for a non-partisan audience the very least people should be in awe about are the at...
Grebe Swallet, solo visit, prep for tomorrow

William ZeroChums[tm] (aka Yours Truly) did a preparatory stint in the cave today, delivering an air cylinder, checking the water levels, moving some spoil and saving the lives of two lizards, both safely taken to the surface to live in peace and lizard-fun until their next misadventures into a cold dark cave. Silly things.

"Witch Marks" were first discovered in this cave when researching for the University of Bristol Spelaeological Society years ago (I can find a link to the relevant paper if anyone comments that they'd like it). Grebe Swallet: Perdition Dig, journey
Переглядів 1 тис.2 роки тому
Michael Perryman and Nick Thorne visit Grebe Swallet, Mendip Hills, to continue digging efforts in the Perdition series, filmed/edited Jan-Feb 2022. The film provides an excellent insight into the "commute" to the current dig limit, beyond the Pit of Despair, a New Hope, and the Blasted Rift. A dam has recently been built by Nick to assist with water management while digging.

38 bags!!!
Great stuff
Been having a bit of a mare recently with UA-cam upload(s) with ridiculously poor bitrate upload times; engineer visited today. Not resolved yet. Perhaps a new router will solve things. Heyho. Shall persevere. Cave digging today (but no pics/vid) and perhaps go again tomorrow (when I will take the camera etc..). Watch this space...
I remember now why I couldn't join you today! Perhaps some nice music might encourage some new diggers to join us?!
The high res version of this will probably be uploaded tomorrow when I've got a spare four hours.
No comments. No comment.
My favourite bike ride ever..
Dave Elliot, ahead of his time with his development of SRT. I knew and worked with him back in the seventies. He encouraged me so much with my outdoor activities like climbing and hill walking. Not caving though. On the occasions when he took me caving, he made me realise that it was a sport for hard men, and that what he was, a hard man! R.I.P.
Recent caving videos seem to be so much better technically speaking
No idea what the Rn222 (Radon) levels are but shall presume they are eye-wateringly bad.
Does anyone know how it can be safely explored?
I remember this as if it was yesterday. It freaked me out watching it as kid.
Hahaha hilarious
Lancashire is an on-purpose statement.
Amazing
I remember watching this as a 10 year old when it was first broadcast. Gave me nightmares and made sure I never went potholing.
Came here to make this comment but you beat me to it!
I’ve been down that hole a few times. My mate Nick Chipphase always a great guide. His name maybe familiar to you.
Never heard of him. Does he work for outdoor centres locally?
@@Chris3141592 No, he’s a bit of a local hero around Taunton Somerset. He’s been mapping and expanding caves in the area for years. He’s also written books on Taunton, as well as a hugely experienced deep wreck diver (He was the star of a 999 episode, when him and two friends were lost at sea for 24 hours. A real interesting man.
Great job!
After visiting again today we have plans to remove the water from the unpleasant Chocolate Baths to make the commute and digging efforts luxurious. Once done we might find more people keen to assist with the significant advance being made with the extension of the cave.
I free climbed it with Bruce Blagden assisting waaaaay back in the day. I vaguely recall Andrew Atkinson doing similarly heroic manoeuvres near the top to gain the parallel uprift. Wouldn't do it now though, me.
Ali Neal RIP
Nice dry trip then. Jolly Good.
Worthy for a linkypoo to DB?
I can confirm this re-enactment was filmed in April 1993 and aired later that year. Ironically we had a major car accident on the way to one of the filming days hence I remember the dates well.

@@lifesahobby Thanks, and lol. IIRC it's a Scutigera Coleoptrata, if that helps with the nightmare(s) for your wife!
I think what makes them extra-scary in a caving context is you simply cannot run away from them if you need to and you're usually lying on the floor so a face-to-face meeting is all the more likely. Yikes!
@@Chris3141592 the worst part for me was the confined space .. the spiders were like just a little nuisance ha ha ...I have seen these little creatures as a kid . For the main part Goatchurch is a friendly cave for children to visit, but there can be some really challenging areas. . Back in 1992 while doing my post-grad at Bristol University, a few of my fellow students hit a few of Burrington Combe cave systems, in Goatchurch we encountered another group. my friend who was a small man could enter the Water Chamber via a tight tunnel, (normally accessible by children only), a man with a 40-inch chest from the other group got stuck trying to attempt this feat., we fed a thin man like a 'torpedo in a sub' from one end of the tight tunnel to link hands while my small friend came up behind to push the feet ... it took 4 hours to free him. . However, many who visit Goatchurch, never go to the end, where a slab that had fallen from the roof (a bit like a slab used in a back garden crazy patio) it had an approx 500-year-old stalagmite (1mm per year growth) growing from it .. clearly something not to move or disturb in any way ... to get there follow the drainpipe to the end, then go through the Letterbox.. then worm your way along then up through a mud chimney supported by Dexion metal struts, before entering what I say is a chamber, which is relative to the experience of confinement prior to reaching this spot ... it, unfortunately, does not have a name on the maps I have seen. . I therefore, pleased to know the area I am talking about is called the Dexion Series in your movie. . Clearly, the editing and shots used in the video are for the sake of making an action movie (well-done b.t.w), ropes the rigging, and a tent... lol
Thank you for your comprehensive commentary John. The "tight tunnel" you mention which links to Water Chamber is historically known as "The Vee" and I have been either side of it but not through it as it is indeed an obstacle to the famine-resistant - the floor there is loose cobbles so arguably could be dug down to make things more accessible but as the main route bypasses it there seems little necessity to do so. You are correct that we went to town, a bit, with the over-equipping of our expeditionary force so what the viewer witnesses in the video is a tad more melodramatic than the reality. Glad you enjoyed watching! (*]:-)
FWIW, John, I'm certain that there's no part of that cave I've not seen (one way or another).
@@Chris3141592 ''The Vee'' glad I learn something new every day. There is a side passage from Water Chamber where it is possible to reach an arm up through a hole in the roof that goes into The Vee, my job was to reach up and grab the belt buckle of the trapped man to ease him along... he needed to breath out all the air in his lungs to make any headway, which meant the team had to physically move him due to his low oxygenated body could not exert itself .. yep, Goatchurch can be deadly in certain areas . I thought your movie with the falling rock etc, was a parody and entertaining . I also make parody movies, I act on stage all the time in Panto (yep, we have Panto in Switzerland too) I made a short movie where I did not get a role . ua-cam.com/video/HZ_daBFx7Cg/v-deo.html . My current role as General Mckensie in Agatha Christie's Then There Werre None.. has been postponed until after the lockdown. .. Only working 2 days a week with the Red Cross, the rest of my time is a garden vacation

Recently got into reading about caves, drains and hidden tunnels. Not been on any trips myself yet but absolutely amazed to find out about this literally a few months after moving away. I lived about 4 minutes walk from this for 2 years and had no idea it was there! Obviously exploring it wouldn't have been an option for a novice but still, this is well interesting.
Nicely captured.
It's desperate to look at this video three years on and see just how little we have got since then. Probably no more than 15-18m and still no major breakthrough. Progress. Yes. But sheeshkebab it's slow and stupidhard[tm] work.
